Support women and girls through Ukraine’s energy crisis
24th February marks four years of full-scale war in Ukraine, where women and girls urgently need your support.
Ongoing attacks on critical infrastructure have plunged communities across Ukraine into prolonged and unpredictable power outages.
Electricity. Water. Heating.
Cut for days — now weeks.
As the crisis deepens, women and girls are bearing a disproportionate share of its impacts.
This is for the woman struggling to meet daily needs (for herself and her children) in freezing, dark conditions.
For the mother forced to navigate school closures and disrupted services.
For the caregiver supporting a family member who depends on electricity-powered medical equipment.
Prolonged blackouts are not just an inconvenience.
They are a threat to safety, economic security and wellbeing

Without lighting, heating or functioning lifts, protection risks increase — especially for pregnant women, women with disabilities, older women, and caregivers.

Remote work is disrupted.
Small businesses stall.
Livelihoods — particularly in education, health and services — are undermined.
What began as temporary hardship is becoming a sustained threat to their safety, economic security, and wellbeing.
Prolonged blackouts are not just an inconvenience.
They are a threat to safety, economic security and wellbeing.
UN Women is committed to supporting women and girls in Ukraine as the energy crisis, exacerbated by winter conditions and the deliberate disruption of power supplies, evolves from temporary hardship into a sustained threat to their safety, economic security, and wellbeing.
We are working to ensure women’s priority needs are addressed and their rights upheld.
We support women-led and women’s civil society organisations to provide:
-
Access to information
-
Psychosocial support
-
Protection services
-
Essential community-based assistance
In subfreezing temperatures, this support is critical.

How are we supporting women and girls in Ukraine?

In every crisis, women and girls bear the heaviest burden.
UN Women’s solution is simple and effective: fund the women-led organisations already on the frontlines. These trusted local leaders know their communities and can respond rapidly, delivering life-saving, targeted support and driving long-term recovery.
But they are at breaking point. UN Women’s 2025 survey found that 90% have already been hit by funding cuts. Over half have suspended critical services for survivors of gender-based violence. Many won’t survive another six months without urgent support.
They urgently need your support.
